In the late 19th century, a finger bowl would be presented to dinner guests just prior to the dessert being served. One would rinse their fingers just before leaving the table. In a less formal setting, the finger bowl may be presented after any course and may even be presented after more than one course in a single meal.

While finger bowls are no longer in fashion, I love to use them on my table during the holiday season. They’re so timeless and French in their design. They are perfect on an elegant cheese board served at the end of the meal. Or you can serve sweet candies or showcase your holiday cookies. If you need something to hold small soaps or washcloths in your powder room, a gold-etched finger bowl is perfect.
